88 Seconds with Karishma Jhalani

88 Seconds with Karishma Jhalani

Meet Karishma: Filmmaker, Art Director and Super Mama. I have long admired her zest for life and her approach to fashion. It's fuss free, to-the-point and just simply fun. I first met Karishma briefly 15 years back when I interned with her mother, Jyotika Jhalani, at Janavi, which ironically also happens to be my first internship.

Karishma and I spoke about her inspirations, her tryst with motherhood and how it’s ok to not be perfect all the time.

What is personal style for you?

Personal style for me, I think, goes beyond just the clothes that you're wearing. You have to be able to communicate with yourself. If you're not being able to speak back to the person that you're looking at in the mirror, none of it makes sense.

How do you approach fashion?

I approach fashion with just how I feel during the day. It's such a cliched answer but you know what. Scratch that. I dress like this everyday. That’s how I approach fashion.

How did you get into film making?

I acted in a movie called Fire and I wasn't allowed to see it because it was about lesbians and I was 9. I was on a set and I didn't completely understand what was going on, but I saw that there was magic happening around me, so I started practicing in my own way by making short films. And then when I was in college, I continued doing that.

What movies would you recommend for a lazy Sunday?

400 Blows

Never Ending Story

Lost in Translation

The Graduate

Cleo from 5-7

And almost any and every Studio Ghibli film

What would be on your ideal Spotify playlist?

Anything by Billie Holiday

Pip Millett

Daft Punk

Arooj Aaftab

And guilty pleasure from my teenage years: The Backstreet Boys!
